My unforgettable weekend in Lisbon

A whole lot of gorgeousness

First off, my biggest regret is that my trip to Lisbon was only for a weekend.  What was I thinking?  I scheduled it in between an extended stay in Barcelona and knew rather quickly that was a mistake.  I did, however, make the best of it and saw as much as possible.

Love the narrow, cobblestone streets

Lisbon is a picturesque city rich with history, warmth and rareness.  Bring good walking shoes, as there are lots and lots of hills.  Don't hesitate walking though, because you will stumble upon many unique treasures.

Isn't this piece fantastic?
Laundry day

I was very fortunate to have a fantastic Couchsurfing host who is extremely passionate about his fascinating city.  I also had the pleasure of getting to know a wonderful friend of his staying with him while I was there.

These two lovely people introduced me to this magnificent street art, and you can learn more about the talented artists right here -   http://portuguese-american-journal.com/lisbon-graffiti-listed-among-the-worlds-best-street-art-portugal/

My host also took me to a Swans concert, with none other than Michael Gira at the forefront.  I didn't know who the Swans were at first; however, realized it was my lucky day!  The show was a resounding success and Michael Gira couldn't have been more personable.  Check out this great video of the band -

The first full day of exploration was in the Alfama District, mainly because that's where I would find St. George's Castle.  I'm quite enamored with castles and get goosebumps when I arrive.  The castle grounds are phenomenal and offer breathtaking views of the city.

I recommend stopping at the Lisbon Cathedral while in the neighborhood.  I was so fascinated by the ironwork doors.

So cool, right?

There are numerous places around the castle to grab a bite and drink (unfortunately, I don't remember any names).  In addition, there are trendy shops everywhere to fulfill just about every desire.

This next area is where I did a lot, as there is so much to see and do.  It's called Belem and is considered to be the city's most historical quarter.  There are many attractions here and most of them are closed on Monday, so pick another day to do some exploration.

Beautiful grounds at the Berardo Museum

Belem Tower

I recommend Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower, Belem Palace, the Berardo Museum, and Pasteis de Belem.  I have a little story to share about Pasteis de Belem.  My host said I had to get pastries at this cafe.  I told him I'm not a big fan of pastries.  He insisted and when we arrived, there was a very long line out the door with people actually "policing" the line to keep it orderly.

Extreme yum factor right here

I came to the conclusion they must be pretty awesome.  He wasn't kidding.  I bought one to eat immediately and two for the following morning.  I took one bite and inhaled all three at once.  Didn't even get a photo of these outrageously delicious tarts, so check them out on the cafe's website - http://www.pasteisdebelem.pt/en.html

I also recommend checking out Praça do Comércio near the Tagus River, where you can capture some great shots.

Now you see why my trip was too short and I need a return visit.  I ♥ you Lisbon!

What to see and do in Berlin!

The Oberbaum Bridge along the Spree River
I traveled to Berlin in April of 2012, and it didn't take long to realize that five days wasn't going to be enough.  Berlin is so vibrant and full of diversity, history, culture, and great food.

Random art

I chose a lovely Airbnb host to stay with in the most perfect location in the Marienstraße neighborhood.  This area is filled with unique shops, bars, restaurants and within walking distance to many tourist destinations.  I highly recommend staying here if you travel to Berlin - https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/214491

One of the most appealing things about Berlin is the artists and their work.  The street art is extraordinary, particularly at the East Side Gallery.  The gallery is located near the Spree River, where you will find some interesting cafes including the very cool beach bar and African market called Cool Runnings (remember the movie by the same name).

Another reason to be excited about visiting Berlin is the food. There are a couple of restaurants I frequented that deserve individual nods.  One is called Das Meisterstück and everything about it is perfect.  The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and you are given a sample of one of their craft beers along with a small bite as soon as you sit down.  Their plethora of craft beers and organic, local food deserves a heaping of praise.

The other favorite was Chipp's, serving up some delicious and unique vegetarian dishes.  I chose the curry pak choi and it was spot on!  On the second visit, I did the "create your own salad", which allows you to select your choice of lettuce, veggies, toppings and dressing.  Accompanied by bread, this is a robust meal.

Great place to lounge
Other restaurants that I recommend are Anand, Mövenpick Café at the Schönefeld Airport, and Oranium.  My companion and I were quite surprised after leaving Oranium, which is on Oranienburger Straße.  Unbeknownst to me, this street is well known for prostitutes.  There were lots of gorgeous women dressed in corsets and thigh high boots lined up along the street.  Here is an interesting article about them - http://www.timeout.com/berlin/features/955/berlin-vice

The list of things to do in Berlin is never-ending, so I will name a few places that I highly recommend.  One of them is the DDR Museum.  It's the most interactive museum that I have ever been to with so many hands-on activities I felt like a kid again.  The Berlin Cathedral is spectacular inside and out.  I was fortunate to sit in on an actual service during my visit.

Chilling at Tiergarten Park

If you want some peace and relaxation time, then check out the wonderful Tiergarten Park.  You can stroll, rent a boat, see animals, have a beer, and more!  I also went to some excellent bars that include Bar Van Gogh, Bellini Lounge and BöseBubenBar.

I foresee a return trip to Berlin in my future.  I think the picture below is a perfect way to end this blog post.

What a fun way to earn money - juggling at a red light.
